Mark Feldmeier General Exam --8.20.7 Distributed Control Systems Examiner: Joe Paradiso Problem 1: History of Distributed Controls in Building Hvac Control
نویسنده
چکیده
Depending upon one's perspective, distributed control has had an either extremely long, or extremely short history in the application of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) control. HVAC systems have been in existence for the entire duration of human architecture, at least in terms of heating, with air-conditioning arriving in the 1800's with the industrial revolution, as a means to improve profits. These systems would be controlled with a human operator in the loop, making decisions to maximize the thermal environment under limited resource constraints. The need for the human was alleviated in 1885 when mechanical heating regulators were brought to the market by Honeywell (the thermostat, although having been invented in 1572, didn't come in to common use until being integrated into a heating unit). It wasn't until the 1920's that such systems became prevalent.

Distributed Model Predictive Control via Proximal
This paper investigates a distributed model predictive control (DMPC) framework for building control applications. The proposed framework is general in that it can be easily customized to solve the dynamic optimization problem for a broad class of multi-zone buildings with relatively complex HVAC systems. The Proximal Jacobian alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), a recent variant...
متن کاملDistributed Control of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems in Smart Buildings
In this paper, the problem of distributed control of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in an energy-smart building is addressed. Using tools from game theory the interaction among several autonomous HVAC units is studied and simple learning dynamics based on trial-and-error learning are proposed to achieve equilibrium. In particular, it is shown that this algorithm rea...
متن کاملA Distributed Approach to Efficient Model Predictive Control of Building HVAC Systems
Model based predictive control (MPC) is increasingly being seen as an attractive approach in controlling building HVAC systems. One advantage of the MPC approach is the ability to integrate weather forecast, occupancy information and utility price variations in determining the optimal HVAC operation. However, application to largescale building HVAC systems is limited by the large number of cont...
متن کاملDistributed Model Predictive Control for building HVAC systems: A Case Study
Model predictive control (MPC) in building HVAC systems incorporates predictions of weather and occupancy to determine the optimal operating setpoints. However, application of MPC strategies to large buildings might not be feasible in real time due to the large number of degrees of freedom in the underlying optimization problem. Decomposing the problem into several smaller sub-problems to be so...
متن کاملDecentralized and Distributed Temperature Control via HVAC Systems in Energy Efficient Buildings
In this paper, we design real-time decentralized and distributed control schemes for Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in energy efficient buildings. The control schemes balance user comfort and energy saving, and are implemented without measuring or predicting exogenous disturbances. Firstly, we introduce a thermal dynamic model of building systems and formulate a steady-...
